Southwest Café’s 7th Annual Sunset 5k
to Benefit Ridgefield Sunrise Cottage

By Barb Tully

Calling all runners, families of runners and just running fans!

If you goal is to run or walk a 5k here is your chance.  Or if you want to encourage a friend or family member, this event is for you.  And if you love the idea of a local restaurant owner who supports her community…look no further.

When Southwest Café in Ridgefield, CT opened in 1987, owner Barb Nevins had just moved here from her former home – New Mexico.  She brought a wonderful Santa Fe cuisine, a Southwest décor, and chilies infused in almost every recipe.  That tradition continues today.  The chilies are handpicked and flown to CT by Barb each summer.

To celebrate 26 years in operation, Southwest Café is sponsoring the 7th Annual Sunset 5k on Saturday, August 3rd.  This fun road race takes place close to the restaurant at 109 Danbury Rd. and is open to all age groups.  Sponsors include Hamlet Hub, Doyle Coffin Architecture, Reynolds and Rowella, the Stockel Family Foundation, Bring ‘n Buy, and more.  Register online at

Race starts at 7pm and will conclude with a margarita for every participant (21 and over).  T-shirts for the first 150 registrants and prizes to be awarded for top 3 male and female runners with additional prizes for top 3 runners by age groups.  Entry fees are $25 if registered before July 31 and $28 after July 31.  Participants can enjoy 15% off dinner that evening!

Proceeds for this event will go once again to Ridgefield Sunrise Cottage – home to six developmentally disabled adults.  The Cottage celebrates eight full years operating as a group home, providing comfortable independent living for the residents. It is located in a neighborhood setting close to the community center of Ridgefield.  The Town of Ridgefield and our generous corporate sponsors, private donors and endowments have embraced the Cottage affirming the importance of assimilating individuals with special needs into our local community.

This is an event that you won’t want to miss!  For more info about Southwest Café,
